Larvae in different stages of growth located 19 September 2008 on Sunflower leaves along the Virgin River by Washington Fields, Washington City, Washington County, Utah
Elevation 2614 feet
N. 37.06.991, W. 113.30.103

Young larvae fed together and most  went into hibernation at the 3rd instar stage. #1 larva went straight through to an adult butterfly.  Hibernation is triggered by a short photoperiod per James A. Scott in "The Butterflies of North America".  I reared these in light 24x7 but they had already been exposed to short photoperiods in the wild.
