Characteristics
  • 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. 
  • Male red with pale face,
  • Clear wings, one rust colored vein, velvety dots  at  the wing to body joint,
  • Rounded  black marks on the lower abdomen
  • 2 pale top and side thoracic stripes.  No other meadowhawk has the top stripes.
  • The immature male is golden
  • Female is reddish brown or a tawny color. 
  • Flight from April to November
  • Prefer ponds and lakes
