Behavior
Hunts for insects, scorpions, crayfish, mice, squirrels, prairie dogs, rabbits, amphibians, and snakes in open plains, grasslands and desert scrub. Lays 6-11 white eggs in nest in small colonies in deserted burrow of prairie dogs, tortoises, armadill, woodchuck, skunk or other mammal.  May dig their own burrow or enlarge an existing one.  The nest is lined with dung, grasses and weeds. They can be seen standing at the entrance to their burrow.  Rattlesnakes prey on owls and the owls imitate the rattling sound as a defense.
