Characteristics
Size: Up to 2 1/2 feet tall  Flower: red flaring corollas mottled with yellow inside. Blooms June and July at low elevations, August and September at high elevations   Leaves: small, downy, narrow, fleshy mostly at the base.  Usually this flower has five petals but this  can vary from four to six petals.  The flower at the top of the page from the Pine Valley Campground area  is unusual in having six petals.
