Characteristics
This perennial plant grow up to 10 feet tall,  pinkish blooms from June to August, lance shaped  leaves are opposite.  Leaves and stems have stinging barbs.

Other
Host plant for several butterflies including Question Mark - Polygonia interrogationis,  Eastern Comma - Polygonia comma,  Satyr Comma - Polygonia satyrus, Milbert's Tortoiseshell - Nymphalis milberti,  Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta,  and Hawaii's Kamehameha Lady - Vanessa tameamea.
