Characteristics
1 to 1 1/2 inches long.  Male upper abdomen is deep red with black markings on the lower sides.  The top of segments 8 and 9  are black.  They have 3 black, irregular stripes on the sides of the thorax.  Eyes and face are dark orange-red. The wings are a rust color  from the base  to the  nodus (slight bend in a tthe wing). The female is yellow instead of red and sometimes the wings are not as colored as the male.  The immature male is colored like the female.
